High-Speed Chase Ends in Arrests for DWI and Evading Arrest in Gillespie County

John Sheehan and Bernard Victor Delery

On Friday, January 19, 2024, at approximately 8:43 p.m., a deputy initiated a traffic stop in the 10000 block of East US Highway 290. The vehicle, however, failed to yield and sped westbound towards Fredericksburg, reaching speeds exceeding 90 mph.

Despite attempts by the Fredericksburg Police Department to spike the vehicle as it approached the city limits, their efforts proved unsuccessful. The fleeing vehicle continued eastbound and eventually turned into the La Quinta parking lot located at 1465 East Main Street.

Upon reaching the parking lot, law enforcement successfully detained both the male driver and male passenger without incident. Subsequent investigation by deputies revealed that both individuals had been drinking and were intoxicated.

The driver, identified as 66-year-old John Sheehan from Houston, was arrested and charged with Evading Arrest or Detention with a Vehicle and Driving While Intoxicated 3rd or More. The passenger, 69-year-old Bernard Victor Delery, also from Houston, faced charges of Public Intoxication.
