San Antonio Police and Fire Departments Offer Safety Tips for the Holiday Season

As the holiday season kicks off, the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) and San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) are urging residents to prioritize safety. Here are some essential tips to ensure a secure and joyous celebration:

Prevent Vehicle Theft and Break-ins:

  1. Be aware of surroundings, especially in parking lots; avoid using cell phones while walking.
  2. Park in well-lit areas.
  3. Remove valuables from vehicles or keep them hidden.
  4. Lock vehicles after exiting.

Safe Driving:

  1. Never drink and drive; plan for a sober ride, use public transportation, or rideshare services.
  2. Stay updated on weather conditions; follow the City on social media or subscribe to text updates for weather-related information.

Prevent Porch Thefts and Home Burglaries:

  1. Notify a family member or neighbor if expecting package delivery.
  2. Discreetly dispose of boxes to avoid attracting burglars.
  3. Avoid displaying holiday gifts or decorations in visible areas.
  4. Keep doors, windows, and garages locked; maintain exterior lighting.
  5. Report suspicious activity to SAPD at 207-SAPD or call 911 for immediate threats.

Fire Prevention and Safety:

  1. Choose a fresh Christmas tree with green needles.
  2. Cut two inches from the tree trunk before placing it in the stand.
  3. Keep the tree three feet away from heat sources; don't block exits.
  4. Add water to the tree stand daily.
  5. Follow instructions for holiday lights; replace damaged strings.
  6. Never use lit candles on the tree; turn off lights before leaving or sleeping.

Cooking Safety and Fire Prevention:

  1. Avoid loose clothing while cooking.
  2. Never leave frying, grilling, or broiling food unattended.
  3. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from cooking areas.
  4. Keep flammable items away from heat sources in the kitchen.
  5. Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.

Heater Safety:

  1. Keep flammable items three feet away from heating equipment.
  2. Don't use ovens to heat homes.
  3. Turn off portable heaters when leaving the room or going to bed.
  4. Plug space heaters directly into outlets; avoid power strips.

Other Safety Precautions:

  1. SAPD's Holiday Crime Reduction Taskforce is active from Thanksgiving through New Year's Day.
  2. Report suspicious activity to SAPD.
  3. SAPD collaborates with the community for a safer San Antonio.
