Traffic Stop on I-10 Leads to Seizure of More Than 20 Pounds of Suspected Methamphetamine

FLATONIA, Texas — Two San Antonio residents were arrested after Fayette County deputies discovered more than 20 pounds of suspected methamphetamine during a traffic stop on Interstate 10, according to Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek.

The traffic stop occurred at approximately 10:58 p.m. on June 6 along Interstate 10 westbound near mile marker 664, east of Flatonia.

Deputy Cody Williams stopped a dark-colored Nissan SUV and made contact with the driver, identified as 24-year-old Roland R. Champion Jr., and passenger Emily Guadalupe Mendoza, 22.

According to the sheriff's office, Champion did not possess a driver's license, and deputies noted inconsistencies in the travel timeline provided by the occupants.

Deputy Williams requested consent to search the vehicle, but Champion declined.

Officer Byron Powe of the Schulenburg Police Department responded to assist and deployed K-9 Semper to conduct a free-air sniff around the exterior of the vehicle. Authorities said the dog alerted to the odor of narcotics.

Based on the alert, deputies conducted a probable-cause search of the SUV and located a black trash bag behind the driver's seat.

Inside the bag, investigators found nine bundles containing a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine.

Authorities said the suspected narcotics had a combined weight of approximately 20.2 pounds.

Champion and Mendoza were arrested and transported to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center. Both were charged with Manufacture or Delivery of a Controlled Substance.

The substance recovered will be submitted for laboratory testing as the investigation continues.
