The San Antonio River Authority is alerting the public to the presence of invasive apple snails (Pomacea sp.) along the River Walk, identified by their bright pink egg cases attached to walls and other structures. Each egg mass can contain thousands of eggs.
Native to South America, these snails lack natural predators in Texas and pose a threat to local ecosystems by consuming large amounts of aquatic vegetation. Their rapid spread can lead to reduced plant life, which in turn affects native wildlife and overall water health.
The River Authority is encouraging public participation in removing the snails through its River Warrior Volunteer Program. A virtual Apple Snail Training session with environmental scientists is scheduled for Thursday, May 29 at noon. Participants can learn how to safely identify and remove the invasive species.
