In adherence to the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) Critical Incident Video Release Procedure, officials have unveiled video footage capturing the events leading up to the officer-involved shooting that took place on Sunday, July 16, 2023. The incident, which unfolded in the 6900 block of IH-35, has prompted authorities to shed light on the events that transpired that night.
Around 11 p.m. on the aforementioned date, SAPD officers responded to a tip indicating the presence of a suspect with multiple warrants at a local hotel. After meticulously monitoring the area for several hours, officers observed the suspect entering a vehicle that matched his known description. One of the detectives, adorned in a tactical vest clearly marked with the word "POLICE" on both the front and back, swiftly approached the suspect and demanded him to reveal his hands. In a sudden turn of events, the suspect fled on foot, prompting the detective to notice that the suspect had a firearm in his possession.
As officers gave chase on foot, additional uniformed officers in two subdued marked patrol vehicles hastened to the scene to provide backup. The suspect continued his escape towards the access road, all the while maintaining a grip on the firearm. Officers in one of the patrol vehicles caught sight of the suspect running toward them, still armed, and proceeded to draw their own firearms. In a calculated move, the officer behind the wheel decelerated and discharged two shots through the windshield of the patrol vehicle, effectively hitting the suspect.
The individual, identified as 30-year-old Adrian San Martin, was transported to a nearby medical facility, where he was declared deceased. The incident resulted in no injuries to any officers or bystanders who were present at the scene.
In accordance with standard protocol for all officer-involved shootings, the District Attorney’s Office has initiated a thorough review of the incident.
